Semaglutide

Semaglutide: Understanding Your Weight Loss Treatment

What is Semaglutide and How Does It Work?

Semaglutide is an FDA-approved medication that has shown significant effectiveness in weight management. It works as a synthetic version of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which your body naturally produces in the intestines.

When administered, Semaglutide:

  • Targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake, helping you feel fuller for longer periods

  • Slows down stomach emptying, which contributes to reduced hunger and prolonged satiety

  • Improves insulin sensitivity, allowing your body to more efficiently burn calories and fat

  • Helps reduce cravings, particularly for high-calorie foods

  • Works gradually in the body to support sustainable weight loss when combined with lifestyle modifications

Many patients report not only weight loss but also improvements in related health markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar control.

Potential Side Effects

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects experienced by patients include:

  • Nausea (typically mild to moderate and often improving over time)

  • Diarrhea (usually temporary as your body adjusts to the medication)

Less Common Side Effects

  • Vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal pain

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Upset stomach

  • Dizziness

  • Bloating

Rare Side Effects

  • Burning sensation in the chest or stomach

Most side effects are mild to moderate and tend to decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Proper hydration, eating smaller meals, and avoiding high-fat foods can help minimize digestive side effects.

Lisa Q.

At 50, I now have a life I had only dreamed of a year before. My body tells me if I am done eating. This surgery is a tool that I have used to the fullest. It is not an easy way out. It still took work. But I honestly know that I would not be living this amazing new life if I didn’t step forward to embrace this life-saving surgery.

Rickie W.

Dr. Nguyen has changed my life completely. I feel so much better and I also feel like I’ve got control of my life again…I had high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. I took at least 5 different medications for the past 30 years. NOW, after surgery I take no medications only vitamins!
